Rescue Me!

Bach Rescue Remedy is a combination of 5 of the 38 Bach Original Flower Remedies.  It can be used for humans and animals during times of stress, where there has been an accident, for shock or emotional upheaval.

For guineas it is perfect to use before  a trip to the Vet, before / after surgery, before bathing, when a new piggy joins the family or one departs.  Rescue Remedy is widely available from chemists, health food stores and supermarkets.

The 5 Flower Remedies that make up Rescue Remedy are:

  1. Star of Bethlehem for shock / trauma
  2. Rock Rose for terror and panic
  3. Cherry Plum for fear of loosing control
  4. Impatiens for irritability and tension
  5. Clematis to help faintness and bemusement

When guineas are introduced to each other for the first time, there may be tension between them, often because of fear:

  • fear of the new guinea
  • fear of the new human
  • fear of a new environment / situation
  • fear of the unknown

Resue Remedy can literally “resuce ” them from the unfamiliar situation in which they find themselves, and enable them to begin acting normally and start enjoying life again.

How to use: Rescue Remedy can be put in the water (4 drops in the bottle, changed daily) or one drop can be rubbed into the back of each ear.  If  your guinea is going into a stressful situation such as a trip to the Vet, put Rescue Remedy on the back of their ears 30 minutes beforehand to calm them down.

Rescue Remedy has no side effects and can safely be used with conventional drugs prescribed by your Vet.  Give for up to a week at a time in the water and as required on the ears for stressful situations.

Golden Oldies: feeling a bit creaky?

Guineas, like humans, can start getting a bit stiff and creaky when they are growing old, so what can you do to help them?

The best natural product we’ve found is Potters Tabritis Tablets which are widely available in health food stores and via the internet.  A guinea pig dose is half a tablet once a day.  The tablet can either be crushed, added to a small amount of water and given by syringe, or offered to the guinea on the tips of your finger and they will usually take it and eat it:)

Tabritis tablets can help to relieve joint pain and stiffness with their combination of herbal ingredients:

  • Poplar Bark is an anti-rheumatic and reduces pain
  • Yarrow is anti-inflammatory in action
  • Prickly Ash Bark stimulates the circulation
  • Burdock Root, Clivers and Uva Ursi act as diuretics

Here is what our customers Margaret and Graham from Hero Cavies have to say:

“Hi Chrissie, just to say a big thank you for your recommendation of Potters Tabritis Tablets for the arthritis.  All four of our old ladies are on them – ages ranging from 5 to 7 years old.  They are still eating for England of course, but their paws are not so twisted, and they are walking more easily. We are sure that they are more comfortable.”

My own lovely Florence enjoyed her daily dose of  Tabritis during her last 18 months.  If I forgot to offer her a tablet in the morning, she would stand and stare at me until I figured out what she wanted:)  Flo had a long and happy life and was active until her last few days.  She died just over a year ago and was a month short of her 9th birthday.

Puzzled By Parasites?

…….well it seems that at least one Vet is – oh dear!

This week we’ve heard of a Vet who prescribed Xenex Ultra to treat Mange Mites when either Xeno 50 or Xeno 450 should have been used.  Here is what the Xenex Ultra product information says: “For the prevention and control of infestations caused by: flies (adult and immature stages), fleas, ticks and lice.” These are all external parasites that live on the surface of the skin. Mange Mites live under the skin and require treatment with Ivermectin.

Here are the three most common Spot-On products prescribed for guineas:

Xeno 50” Ivermectin is used in many species for the control of mites, roundworms and lice.” For guineas up to 800gms bodyweight. Not effective against Ringworm (a type of fungal infection). Do not use on pregnant or lactating sows.

Xeno 450“Ivermectin is used in many species for the control of mites, roundworms and lice.” For guineas over 800gms bodyweight.  Not effective against Ringworm (a type of fungal infection).  Do not use on guineas under 16 weeks or on pregnant or lactating sows.

Xenex Ultra“For the prevention and control of infestations caused by: flies (adult and immature stages), fleas, ticks and lice.” Do not use on guineas under 16 weeks or on pregnant or lactating sows.

Product brochures, data sheets and safety information for each of these items can be found here on the manufacturer’s website.

For more detailed information about fungal and parasitic problems, check out the identification page on our website which will help you to discover what type of skin problem your guinea has.

External parasites such as lice and hay mites can easily be removed by using our Lice ‘n’ Easy shampoo. When you have used one of the products mentioned above, you will still need to bathe your guinea to get rid of the dead lice and to remove the nits (egg cases).

Ratewatchers DIY Diet

Are you feeding your guineas a well-balanced diet or is it a bit hit and miss as to what fresh food they get each day?

Check out the Ratewatchers DIY Diet from Planet Guinea where all the hard work has been done for you. The whole diet is covered and includes recommendations for fresh food, dried food, hay, grass and water.

Guineas need a very specific ratio of Calcium:Phosphorous in their diet and imbalances can cause health problems including bladder stones.

This diet has evolved over the last couple of years and is very easy to follow.  Beneficial for all guineas, not just those with bladder problems that is was originally designed for.

Enjoy!
