RSPCA Pet Adoption Week 2008

Pet Adoption Week 2008

The RSPCA’s Pet Adoption Week (PAW) 2008 takes place from Sunday 7th June to Sunday 15th June. The aim is to highlight the thousands of animals that come into them each year looking for their “Forever Home”.

If you are thinking of adding to your guinea family or just starting out, why not consider adopting from one of the many RSPCA centres or privately run rescues around the country, rather than going to a pet shop?

Pet shops only sell mini-pigs that are usually between 6 and 12 weeks old. These babies are very cute, so they get snapped up quickly but often these guineas come with unwanted “free gifts”. Many are mis-sexed or already pregnant if the boars haven’t been separated from their sisters / mother at 3 weeks of age by the breeder. The resulting babies then need to be kept or rehomed. Other common “gifts” include guineas with respiratory problems or fungal / parasitic skin problems.

If you want a pet shop pig then come to Reading Guinea Pig Rescue! We have quite a few from a well known company that have ended up as guests here. Its suprising that when given the choice people see quite easily that an adult guinea is a better match (usually) for a family.

All the residents at Gorgeous Guineas are adopted:) Most came via Reading Guinea Pig Rescue and several started life at the “well known company” that Karen mentions above. Older piggies are great and my most recent addition is Mr Happy who was 5 when I adopted him.
